Even though Emily & Benjamin's relationship wasn't romantic, he was a influence on her writing. He soon became second in the series of men, that Emily referred to as her tutor, preceptor or master.
Even though her family and friends were probably aware of Dickinson's writing, it was not until after her death in 1886—when Lavinia, Emily's younger sister, discovered her cache of poems. Her first collection of poetry was published in 1890 by her friends Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Mabel Loomis Todd, they both heavily edited her poems, a complete volume didn't appear until 1955. Most of her poems had two main topics; death and immortality, the each keep occurring in many poems. Emily died in 1866, After her death her family members found her hand-sewn books, they contained nearly 1,800 poems.
